Best Ball, Scramble, Match Play: Golf Trip Formats Explained

Every good golf trip mixes formats so one bad round never sinks a whole day. These are the five formats that cover almost every trip, what makes each one work, and when to use it.

What is a scramble?

Everyone tees off, the team picks the best ball, and everyone plays their next shot from that spot, repeating until the ball is holed. One team score per hole. It is the most social format in golf and the most forgiving: a topped tee shot costs nothing if a teammate found the fairway. Use it for the arrival round when half the group just got off a plane.

What is best ball (four-ball)?

Everyone plays their own ball the whole hole, and the lowest individual score on each team counts as the team score. You get a real round of golf with a safety net. This is the workhorse trip format: competitive, but a blow-up hole disappears if your partner made par.

What is alternate shot (foursomes)?

Two players, one ball, alternating shots, with tee shots alternating by hole. The hardest format in golf and the fastest: half the shots, half the pace-of-play problems. Nothing builds (or tests) a partnership like apologizing your way up a fairway. One morning of it per trip is the right dose.

What is match play?

You win holes, not totals. Make a 4 to your opponent's 5 and you are 1 up; the match ends when someone leads by more holes than remain. An 8 on one hole loses exactly one hole, which keeps every match alive and makes it the right scoring for team trips. Concessions are part of the game: short putts get given, and picking up keeps pace moving.

Match play keeps score in holes, not strokes: 5 up thru 12.

What is stableford?

Points per hole against your handicap-adjusted score: a net bogey earns 1, net par 2, net birdie 3, and so on. Blow-up holes score zero instead of wrecking the card, so aggressive golf pays. It is the best individual-day format for groups with a wide handicap spread.

Mixing them into a weekend

A proven three-day recipe: scramble on arrival day, best ball and alternate shot in the middle, singles match play to finish. Give every format handicap strokes at its standard allowance (the allowances guide lists them), and run the whole thing as a two-team Ryder Cup with the trip setup guide.

AGI Golf scores every one of these formats live, with handicaps applied automatically and team standings everyone can watch.
